HELMET- It is not just an idea or an activity to execute but definitely a wholesome project and innovative step to bring about a change in the current scenario and forthcoming too. To make it compulsory in an academic institute where the majority of students belong to a specific age group and believe in breaking the rules and rewriting it was like a fresh breeze in the campus. To make No Helmet, No Parking possible, LEADer Mandavi Singh of Vasanta College for Women, Rajghat (Varanasi) started working on it in her campus. No better place could be than this because safety along with security is most important for those who will be taking the responsibilities of this nation in coming times.
LEADers main challenge was to bring in practice of wearing Helmet because even Traffic Police and Government are trying for people’s safety. In her college, it was not easy to convince students as well as teaching and non-teaching staff. After taking permission from principal for her initiative in the college campus, LEADer Mandavi Singh along with her teammates started working on it. As their second move they renovated the parking area and channelised the parking system. The outline of parking slots were sketched individually for the students, teachers & non-teaching staff. It was tried by them to give it the best possible look.
The administration was quite supportive throughout the entire execution of the project. In an informal manner they requested everyone to wear helmet whenever they entered college premises by two-wheelers. Whether it was conveying the message through posters or pamphlets, making students & others aware by visiting classrooms they didn’t give up. Even the negative comments by others didn’t let their spirits down.
The LEADers had already decided to fulfil their dream because this is what LEAD teaches us- “to believe in ourselves when no one else could.” A better change could be seen in the campus when the number of students reaching college without helmets was reduced to just few. The best part was the encouragement & appreciation of the teachers and management of the college.
Hard work always pays off and never goes in vain; it was witnessed when the LEADer of the team was rewarded by honourable Traffic S.P. of the Varanasi.
Now, we can see the result and change becoming 100% Helmet in the College. This has inspired other college students also, where they are taking this initiative in their respective colleges.
For her initiative, LEADer Mandavi Singh got National level award for best initiative at YUVA SUMMIT 2018, a national youth conference in Karnataka.
